Mesoblast has acquired a world-wide licence to use a patented technology incorporating the use of certain adult stem cells for orthopaedic applications. The licence covers all divisional filings, continuation-in-parts applications, and new applications representing improvements to the technology.

The intellectual property was fully assigned to Angioblast Systems by the Institute of Medical and Veterinary Science (IMVS) and the Hanson Institute in Adelaide, South Australia, where the MPC technology was discovered.

The adult stem cells, called Mesenchymal Precursor Cells (MPC), can be obtained from various sites in the body, grown in large numbers and differentiated into specialised tissues such as bone, cartilage, blood vessels and heart muscle, for use in conditions requiring tissue regeneration and repair.

The patented technology enables:

• precise identification and isolation of MPCs, resulting in a much purer and more potent starting population of adult stem cells

• more efficient expansion and scale-up of the isolated adult stem cell population, giving rise to more potent and effective products and lower costs of production

• generation of universal products for use in any recipient due to lack of immune rejection, enabling implementation of the sustainable business models typical of high-margin pharmaceutical products

• product development targeting a wide range of commercial applications and markets for diseases with unmet clinical needs;

• development of cell-based products without the ethical issues surrounding the use of embryonic stem cells
